So I'm on the market for a beard trimmer that will give me something closer than a beard length, but longer than a clean shave- basically, the length of 5-day scruff or so. Is there such a thing? An electric razor is designed to shave close...

My advice would be to ignore any of these built in multi length guard trimmers that have become more popular recently they tend to have a small cutting area and are often overpriced and plastic bladed (see below). Go for a traditional set of clippers with clip on guards like most barbers/hairdressers would use. On these, look out for ones with metal blades... this is very important, many cheaper ones come with one or both blades plastic... they are rubbish and should be avoided like the devil's spawn.

Philips Norelco Bodygroom BG2040 (60 bucks amazon)...for all your trimming needs; or a wahl lithium ion set of clippers for hair (40 bucks amazon) with the smaller neck trimmer works well too

Wahl is a good brand, you might want to check it up.

Also use the metal guards and make sure you can buy the lubricant oli for your clippers when they need maintenance.

I use an Andis with blades 7F, 5F and use a 50 blade for clean-up and lines...
