I have an external drive that is no longer connecting to the computer.  How hard is it to switch out the hard drive to another external drive?  Does the other type of external drive matter?  Any help would be appreciated.

have you tried exchange the cable? Cables break all the time...

If so, you'll need to make it work to copy the files to another drive.

Personally I have had more hard drives break than cables break.

If you mean by not connecting, your hard drive doesn't show up, then the likelihood is that it is kaput. If you can get it to show there is software to recover lost files.
